John Kongos

Heavy, tribal-influenced rock with a pioneering use of loops and grit. Stomping rhythms and psychedelic swagger that bridge the gap between glam and early indie dance.

Intro

John Kongos creates a sound that is simultaneously grounded in the earth and floating in a psychedelic haze. It is defined by massive, repetitive drum patterns that feel more like ancient rituals than standard rock beats. The guitars are thick and fuzzy, cutting through the mix with a distinctive 1970s grit that feels both dangerous and inviting. His voice, a resonant baritone, sits right in the middle of the storm, delivering lyrics that often touch on folklore and social observation.

What truly sets him apart is his status as a technical pioneer. Long before digital samplers were commonplace, Kongos was experimenting with tape loops and rhythmic repetitions that would later influence the Madchester scene and modern alternative rock. There is a specific 'stomp' to his music, a heavy-footed momentum that makes it impossible to sit still. It carries the heat of his South African roots mixed with the glam-rock polish of 1970s London.

To understand his impact, start with 'He's Gonna Step On You Again'. It is the blueprint for his rhythmic innovation and showcases the heavy, looped percussion that made him a legend. From there, move to 'Tokoloshe Man' for a darker, more atmospheric take on his signature groove. These tracks represent a bridge between the psychedelic 60s and the rhythmic experimentation of the decades that followed.

John Theodore Kongos (born 6 August 1945) is a South African singer and songwriter of Greek ancestry, best known for his 1971 top 10 hit single "He's Gonna Step on You Again", which has become a standard and spawned multiple successful cover versions, including by The Party Boys, the Chantoozies, and the Happy Mondays (under the shortened title "Step On"). His other big hit was "Tokoloshe Man" (which was also covered by the Happy Mondays), which was featured on the TV show Life on Mars and the CD soundtrack. His second album, Kongos, made the top 30 of the UK Albums Chart; but his subsequent singles, "Great White Lady" (30 June 1972), "Higher than God's Hat" (29 June 1973) and "Ride the Lightning" (11 April 1975) did not chart.
