Jess and the Ancient Ones

Swirling psychedelic rock with a dark, occult edge. Powerful soulful vocals meet a three-guitar wall of sound and vintage organ grooves for a midnight ritual vibe.

Intro

Jess and the Ancient Ones sound like a fever dream from 1971 that somehow survived into the modern era. Their music is a thick, intoxicating brew of heavy psychedelic rock, garage-rock grit, and a touch of progressive complexity. At the center is a massive, three-guitar attack that weaves intricate melodies around a driving rhythm section, all anchored by the warm, haunting hum of a Hammond organ.

What truly sets them apart is Jasmin Saarela's vocal performance. She doesn't just sing; she commands the room with a soulful, bluesy power that feels more like a high priestess than a rock frontwoman. The production leans heavily into analog warmth, making every snare hit and guitar lick feel tactile and lived-in, while the songwriting embraces the 'occult rock' aesthetic without ever feeling like a gimmick.

Start with their self-titled debut for a more traditional heavy rock experience, or dive into 'The Horse and Other Weird Tales' to hear them fully embrace their strangest, most kaleidoscopic surf and jazz influences. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone who wants their rock music to feel dangerous, mystical, and deeply grooving.

Jess and the Ancient Ones is a Finnish psychedelic rock band that was formed in Kuopio in 2010. Some of the members of the band were co-musicians in the Finnish metal band Deathchain. The band has released four albums: The self-titled Jess and the Ancient Ones in 2012, Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes in 2015, The Horse and Other Weird Tales in 2017, and Vertigo in 2021. They have also released the 2013 EP Astral Sabbat, which was produced by Tore Stjerna of Necromorbus Studio. The band had a notable collaboration with Spain's Deadmask in a 7" split release The Deepest Sea / Into Starlit Chambers.
