Lush, technical guitar fusion that bridges the gap between Nordic folk-mysticism and slick Los Angeles studio precision. Sophisticated, warm, and deeply melodic.
Janne Schaffer creates a sound that is simultaneously grounded in the earthy, mystical landscapes of Sweden and the high-gloss production of 1970s jazz-fusion. His guitar work is characterized by a singing, melodic quality that often feels like a lead vocal, utilizing subtle wah-wah and liquid sustain to navigate complex harmonic terrain. It is music that feels expensive and meticulously crafted, yet it never loses its organic, human pulse.
What truly distinguishes Schaffer is his ability to blend the technical demands of fusion with the narrative soul of progressive rock. While his peers might lean into pure abstraction, Schaffer maintains a strong sense of melody and atmosphere, often evoking the feeling of a cinematic journey through a dense forest or a bustling, neon-lit city. His collaborations with the Porcaro family and Björn J:son Lindh highlight a musician who is equally comfortable in a tight groove as he is in an expansive, ambient soundscape.
To understand his range, start with his self-titled 1973 debut for a raw look at his fusion roots, then move to 'Earmeal' to hear the pinnacle of his polished, international session-player era. It is the perfect discovery for those who love the technicality of Steely Dan but crave the atmospheric depth of European art-rock.
Jan Erik Tage "Janne" Schaffer (born 24 September 1945) is a Swedish songwriter and guitarist. He is best known for his work as a session guitarist for ABBA but he has also recorded with artists such as Bob Marley, Johnny Nash, Art Farmer and Tony Williams. He also played at the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival. Schaffer's 1979 album Earmeal included session work from brothers Jeff, Steve and Mike Porcaro, as well as their father, Joe Porcaro. This is one of the few instances where the entire Porcaro family appears together on one album, the most well-known examples being Toto's Toto IV and The Seventh One. Schaffer is a member of the Electric Banana Band where he plays guitar as the character 'Zebra'. He also performs with the group The Night Agent. Schaffer received the Albin Hagström Memorial Award in 1999 and in 2005 Illis quorum.
