Pegasus

Pegasus is a seminal Catalan jazz-fusion quartet formed in 1981, emerging as a supergroup of the Spanish progressive scene. The lineup consists of Max Sunyer (guitar) and Josep 'Kitflus' Mas (keyboards), both formerly of Iceberg, alongside Santi Arisa (drums, ex-Fusioon) and Rafael Escoté (bass, ex-Gotic).

Their sound identity is characterized by a highly polished, melodic approach to fusion that incorporates elements of symphonic prog and Mediterranean folk sensibilities. Throughout the 1980s, they were a dominant force in the European jazz circuit, notably performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1984. Their career arc shows a transition from the dense, guitar-heavy fusion of 'Nuevos Encuentros' to more atmospheric and cinematic works like 'Simfonía d'una gran ciutat'. Critically, they are regarded as the pinnacle of the 'Layetana' scene, representing a sophisticated evolution of Spanish rock into a world-class jazz idiom.
