Islands emerged from the ashes of the highly influential Montreal band The Unicorns in 2005. Led by Nicholas Thorburn (Nick Diamonds), the project has served as a primary vehicle for his evolving pop experiments.
Their debut, Return to the Sea (2006), is a cornerstone of the mid-2000s indie boom, featuring collaborations with members of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. The album established their signature blend of 'quirky' instrumentation, such as the recorder, with sophisticated songwriting. Over ten albums, the band has pivoted through various styles: Arm's Way explored darker, more expansive art rock; Vapours leaned into 80s-inspired synth-pop; and A Sleep & A Forgetting offered a stripped-back, soulful meditation on grief. Critically, Islands is respected for maintaining a high level of melodic craftsmanship while embracing an idiosyncratic, often surrealist lyrical perspective. They occupy a unique space in the indie landscape, bridging the gap between the lo-fi whimsy of the Elephant 6 collective and the polished art-pop of the 21st-century Montreal scene.
