A relentless collision of d-beat urgency and black metal frost. Raw, political, and uncompromisingly loud music for the end of the world.
Iskra is a seminal Canadian collective that pioneered the subgenre known as 'blackened crust.' Emerging from the ashes of the 1990s crust punk band Black Kronstadt, the group successfully synthesized the d-beat energy of bands like Discharge and Amebix with the cold, atmospheric aggression of black metal.
They are central figures in the Red and Anarchist Black Metal (RABM) movement, utilizing their platform to disseminate anarchist political theory, which stands in stark contrast to the right-wing or apolitical leanings of much of the black metal scene. Their sound is characterized by 'buzzsaw' guitar tones, relentless percussion that oscillates between punk grooves and blast beats, and high-pitched, agonizing vocals. Critically, they are respected for their uncompromising DIY ethics and their ability to bridge the gap between the punk and metal subcultures. Despite touring difficulties and border issues due to their political affiliations, they have maintained a cult status as one of the most consistent and intense live acts in the extreme underground.
