Hypnoskull

Hypnoskull, the primary project of Belgian artist Patrick Stevens, is a cornerstone of the rhythmic noise and powernoise movements that emerged in the 1990s. Formed in 1992, the project became a flagship act for the influential Ant-Zen label, helping to define a sound that merged the structural repetition of techno with the abrasive textures of industrial and noise.

Stevens' background in the Belgian alternative scene and his collaborations with Dirk Ivens (of Sonar and Dive) provided a foundation in minimalist, hard-hitting electronics that he eventually evolved into a more complex, breakbeat-infused style. His work is characterized by the use of overdriven percussion, political sampling, and a 'war-like' approach to sound design that critiques both the music industry and societal structures. Critically, Hypnoskull is viewed as a bridge between the old-school industrial tradition and the modern industrial-techno crossover, maintaining a cult following for his uncompromising live performances and prolific output across numerous pseudonyms.
