Hexen

Hexen emerged from the Los Angeles metal scene in the early 2000s, positioning themselves as a pivotal force in what would become known as the New Wave of Thrash Metal (NWOTM). Unlike many of their peers who focused on retro-mimicry, Hexen integrated technical and melodic elements reminiscent of progressive metal into a high-speed thrash framework.

Their sound identity is characterized by complex song structures, frequent tempo shifts, and a high level of instrumental proficiency, particularly in the interplay between the lead guitars. Culturally, they represented a more 'intellectual' wing of the thrash revival, utilizing their platform for pointed social and political critique rather than genre-typical escapism. Despite lineup changes, their debut 'State of Insurgency' remains a benchmark of the era, praised by critics for its balance of old-school spirit and modern technicality. They are frequently associated with the 'Big Four' of the NWOTM alongside bands like Havok and Warbringer, though their emphasis on melody often draws comparisons to the more technical side of the 1980s Bay Area scene.
