Intro

Death Angel is a foundational pillar of the second wave of Bay Area thrash metal, formed in 1982 in Daly City, California. Composed originally of cousins of Filipino descent, the band brought a unique cultural and technical perspective to the burgeoning metal scene.

Their early work, particularly 'The Ultra-Violence', is celebrated for its precocious complexity, recorded while the members were still in their teens. Their sound evolved significantly with 'Act III', which introduced diverse influences including funk and acoustic textures, setting them apart from more rigid contemporaries like Exodus or Slayer. After a decade-long hiatus following a catastrophic tour bus accident in 1991, the band reformed in 2001 and has since enjoyed a prolific second act. This modern era is marked by a more consistent, heavy-hitting thrash sound that culminated in a 2019 Grammy nomination. Critically, they are regarded as one of the most technically gifted bands of the 'Big Eight' of thrash, maintaining a legacy of high-energy live performance and sophisticated songwriting.
