Intro

GOD was a seminal British experimental ensemble led by Kevin Martin (later known as The Bug). Formed in 1987, the group acted as a bridge between the extreme metal world of Earache Records and the avant-garde jazz scene of London and New York.

The lineup was a revolving door of heavyweights, including Justin Broadrick (Godflesh), Tim Hodgkinson (Henry Cow), and frequent collaboration with John Zorn. Their sound identity is defined by 'industrial jazz,' a term that fails to capture the sheer density of their nine-piece arrangements. They utilized the rhythmic weight of dub and the aggression of grindcore to frame free-improvisation, creating a sound that was both intellectually rigorous and viscerally punishing. Critically, they are viewed as a precursor to the 'isolationist' ambient and techno-animal movements of the late 90s. Their career arc peaked with 'The Anatomy of Addiction' before Martin and Broadrick moved toward more electronic-focused projects. They remain a cult touchstone for fans of extreme music who find standard genre boundaries too restrictive.
