Gescom

Gescom (an abbreviation of Gestalt Communications) is a seminal electronic music collective formed in 1994, primarily associated with the Skam Records label and the Manchester electronic scene. While often viewed as a side project for Autechre's Sean Booth and Rob Brown, the project is officially described as an 'umbrella' involving over 20 rotating members, including Andy Maddocks, Darrell Fitton, and Russell Haswell.

This collaborative anonymity has allowed Gescom to explore sounds that deviate from the core Autechre discography, often leaning more heavily into acid techno, industrial electro, and extreme conceptualism. Their 1998 release 'Minidisc' was a landmark in format-specific composition, designed to exploit the shuffle and loop functions of the then-popular hardware. Critically, Gescom is regarded as a cornerstone of the IDM and glitch movements, praised for their rigorous technical execution and their role in bridging the gap between academic experimentalism and the UK's underground rave culture. Their influence is visible in the works of artists like Jega and Phoenecia, maintaining a legacy of uncompromising, high-concept electronic production.
