Intro

Flipturn sounds like the exact moment the sun dips below the horizon, casting everything in a hazy, nostalgic glow. Their music is built on a foundation of shimmering surf-rock guitars and driving rhythms, but it is anchored by Dillon Basse’s distinctive, gravelly vocals that add a layer of raw emotional weight to their otherwise bright arrangements. It is cinematic indie rock that feels both expansive and deeply personal.

What sets them apart is their mastery of the slow-burn crescendo. Many of their tracks begin with delicate, atmospheric synth pads or clean guitar lines before erupting into massive, anthemic payoffs. This dynamic range mirrors the transition from youthful optimism to the more complex realities of adulthood, a recurring theme in their songwriting. They manage to capture the 'endless summer' aesthetic without falling into clichés, instead opting for a sound that feels textured and lived-in.

For those new to the band, Shadowglow is the essential starting point. It showcases their evolution from a garage band in Florida to a polished, festival-ready powerhouse. The album balances high-energy tracks that demand movement with introspective moments that reward close listening, making it a versatile soundtrack for both social gatherings and solitary reflection.

Flipturn, stylized as flipturn, is an American indie rock band from Fernandina Beach, Florida formed in 2015. The band consists of founding members Dillon Basse (vocals), Tristan Duncan (guitar) and Madeline Jarman (bass) who founded the band as high school seniors. After their college years at the University of Florida, they picked up guitarist and synthesizer player Mitch Fountain, and drummer Devon VonBalson. Flipturn gained traction in 2018 with their EP Citrona. The band signed to Dualtone Records in June 2022. They released their debut album Shadowglow in August 2022, which received positive reception. The album release was followed by a tour through the United States in late 2022 into 2023 and the festival lineups of Lollapalooza, Governor’s Ball, Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, and SXSW. The band's second studio album, Burnout Days, was released in January 2025.
