FFWD

FFWD was a short-lived but highly influential supergroup consisting of Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Thomas Fehlmann (The Orb, Palais Schaumburg), and Kris Weston and Dr. Alex Paterson (The Orb).

Their primary output, the 1994 self-titled album, stands as a landmark in the ambient techno and 'illbient' movements. The sound identity is defined by the integration of 'Frippertronics' - a tape-delay system creating dense guitar layers - with the dub-inflected, sample-heavy production style of The Orb. This collaboration bridged the gap between 1970s experimentalism and 1990s club culture. Critically, the project is viewed as a successful experiment in collective improvisation within a studio environment, moving away from the structured songwriting of their individual careers toward a more fluid, textural approach. Despite the pedigree of its members, the project remained somewhat obscure, cherished by collectors of 90s electronica for its unique blend of progressive rock textures and downtempo rhythms. Its influence can be heard in later 'folktronica' and more sophisticated branches of IDM where organic instrumentation is heavily processed through digital means.
