Elokuu

Breezy Finnish hip-hop infused with swing, jazz, and folk. It feels like a midsummer party at a lakeside cabin where the brass section showed up late.

Intro

Elokuu sounds like the precise moment a Finnish summer hits its peak. It is a vibrant, organic blend of traditional acoustic textures and modern rhythmic sensibilities. You will hear the bounce of a double bass and the bright flare of a trumpet section, but it is all anchored by a steady hip-hop pulse and the distinct, conversational flow of Finnish rap. It is music that feels sun-drenched and lived-in, avoiding the coldness of digital production in favor of a warm, analog glow.

What makes them truly distinctive is their 'cityhumppa' aesthetic. They managed to take the DNA of old-school swing and Finnish schlager (iskelmä) and graft it onto a contemporary urban framework. While many hip-hop acts lean into grit or minimalism, Elokuu leans into melody and communal celebration. The interplay between Nopsajalka’s melodic reggae-tinged delivery and Juno’s grounded rapping creates a dynamic that feels both sophisticated and accessible.

Start with their massive debut single 'Soutaa huopaa' to understand the blueprint. It perfectly captures their ability to turn a simple acoustic hook into a national anthem. From there, dive into the album 'Hääväki saapuu' for a fuller picture of how they use brass and swing arrangements to elevate the hip-hop genre into something uniquely Nordic and timeless.

Elokuu ("August" in Finnish) is a Finnish hip hop band founded in 2011 by reggae artist Nopsajalka, Kenyan-Finnish rapper Juno, and producer Jonas W. Karlsson as a mix of Finnish swing and jazz. Their first official single "Soutaa huopaa" was released on 20 January 2012 with great success. It peaked at number 2 on the Finnish Singles Chart. Elokuu's debut album Hääväki saapuu released by Capitol / EMI Music entered the Finnish Albums Chart at number 2 in its first week of release.
