Ed Rush (Ben Settle) and Optical (Matt Quinn) are the primary architects of the 'neurofunk' subgenre, a pivotal evolution of drum and bass that emerged in the late 1990s. Formed in 1997, the duo moved away from the breakbeat-heavy 'jungle' sound toward a more synthesized, techno-influenced aesthetic characterized by the 'stepper' beat and highly modulated bass frequencies.
Their label, Virus Recordings, became the epicenter for this sound, influencing a generation of producers including Bad Company UK and Noisia. Optical's background as a high-level engineer for Goldie and Grooverider provided a level of sonic fidelity that was unprecedented in the scene at the time. Their debut album, Wormhole (1998), is universally cited as a landmark release, shifting the genre's focus toward dark, sci-fi atmospheres and intricate sound design. Critically, they are regarded as the bridge between the raw energy of early hardcore and the polished, aggressive technicality of modern drum and bass. Their influence persists in the 'tech' side of the genre, maintaining a legacy of uncompromising, club-focused innovation.
