Cause 4 Concern (C4C) is a foundational pillar of the techstep and neurofunk subgenres within drum and bass. Formed in 1999 in Guildford, the group originally consisted of Optiv (Edward Holmes), Mark Clements (CZA), and Stuart Perkins.
Their sound identity is defined by a 'surgical' approach to production, characterized by high-precision drum programming, aggressive Reese basslines, and a cold, industrial atmosphere. They were instrumental in moving the genre away from the jazz-influenced sounds of the mid-90s toward a more aggressive, techno-influenced aesthetic. Their influence is felt across the entire spectrum of modern neurofunk, having mentored or inspired a generation of producers including Noisia and Phace. Following the tragic passing of Optiv in 2020, the project continues as a solo venture by Mark Clements, maintaining the legacy of one of the most respected production outfits in the UK underground. Their inclusion in Grand Theft Auto III's MSX FM station cemented their cultural status as the definitive sound of high-stakes, urban intensity.
