Du Blonde is the creative vehicle for Newcastle-born artist Beth Jeans Houghton, representing a radical departure from their earlier work as Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny. After an epiphany at a David Bowie exhibition, Houghton abandoned their baroque-folk roots for a sound defined by aggression, attitude, and reinvention.
Their debut under the moniker, 'Welcome Back to Milk' (2015), was produced by Jim Sclavunos of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, establishing a sonic palette of heavy riffs and raw vocal performances. Houghton is a true polymath, directing music videos for major acts like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Laura Marling, which informs the visual and theatrical nature of the Du Blonde project. Their work often addresses themes of misogyny, mental health, and artistic autonomy. Critically, Du Blonde is seen as a vital voice in the UK indie scene, bridging the gap between the art-school rock of the 70s and the DIY punk ethics of the present.
