Shimmering, reverb-drenched guitars and icy synths that feel like a neon-lit ritual. Tragic wave for late-night drives and existential stargazing.
Drab Majesty creates a sound that feels like a transmission from a more stylish, melancholic dimension. It is built on a foundation of 1980s gothic rock and new wave, but it strips away the dated camp in favor of a lush, 'mid-fi' atmosphere. The music is dominated by guitars that sound like they are underwater, dripping with chorus and delay, dancing around steady, mechanical drum machine pulses. It is a sound that manages to be both icy and deeply comforting.
What truly sets the project apart is the commitment to its 'tragic wave' aesthetic. Deb Demure’s vocals are commanding yet distant, often layered to create an androgynous, choral effect that feels more like a religious invocation than a pop song. The melodies are soaring and grand, but they carry a persistent weight of nostalgia and loss, as if every note is mourning a future that never arrived.
Start with 'The Demonstration' if you want to experience their most cohesive conceptual work, or 'Modern Mirror' for a more polished, melodic entry point. Both albums perfectly capture the band's ability to turn cold synthesizers and jagged post-punk rhythms into something shimmering and transcendent.
Drab Majesty is an American musical project founded by Andrew Clinco in Los Angeles, California in 2011. Clinco, the drummer for the band Marriages, adopted the androgynous character of Deb Demure for the project. Keyboardist and vocalist Mona D (Alex Nicolaou) joined the band in 2016. Since signing to Dais Records, Drab Majesty has released three albums: Careless (2015), The Demonstration (2017) and Modern Mirror (2019). Drab Majesty combine androgynous aesthetics and commanding vocals with futuristic and occult lyrics, a style Demure refers to as "tragic wave" and "mid-fi". To create his imposing stage presence, Demure employed costumes, makeup and props to accompany his lush, '80s-influenced soundscapes.
