However, the 1997 release 'Enthrone Darkness Triumphant' marked a pivotal shift toward English lyrics and high-fidelity production, alienating purists while securing a massive international audience. Their sound identity is defined by the integration of classical music theory, particularly the Romantic and Modernist eras, into extreme metal structures. Throughout the early 2000s, the addition of ICS Vortex's clean operatic vocals and Mustis's sophisticated keyboard arrangements pushed them into progressive territory. Critically, they are viewed as the 'gateway' band for extreme metal, often criticized by the underground for their commercial success but respected for their technical precision and influence on the 'blackened' aesthetic in film and video game scoring.
