Stormblåst

Released in 1996, Stormblåst is the second studio album by Dimmu Borgir and stands as a pivotal moment in the evolution of symphonic black metal. Unlike their later maximalist works, this album features a murky, analog production that emphasizes Stian Aarstad's dominant keyboard arrangements. It is notably the band's last album performed entirely in Norwegian and the last to feature lyrics by Aldrahn. The record is famous for its 'borrowed' melodies, including an intro from the band Magnum and a track ('Sorgens kammer') taken from the Amiga game Agony, which led to significant changes in the 2005 re-recording. Sonically, it bridges the gap between the raw grit of early 90s Norwegian black metal and the cinematic ambitions that would later define the band. It remains a fan favorite for its distinct, wintry atmosphere and its rejection of the 'three-word title' trend that would define the rest of their discography.
