Demented Are Go!

Gravel-throated vocals meet frantic upright bass in a collision of 50s rockabilly and 80s punk. Raw, theatrical, and unapologetically loud horror-fueled chaos.

Intro

Demented Are Go! sounds like a haunted carnival ride that’s been sped up to dangerous levels. It is the sonic equivalent of a B-movie creature feature where the monster is wearing a leather jacket and playing a battered upright bass. The music is defined by 'Sparky' Phillips' unmistakable voice, which sounds less like singing and more like someone gargling broken glass and whiskey, providing a terrifying but strangely charismatic focal point for their frantic rhythms.

What truly sets them apart is the sheer filth of their sound. While many psychobilly bands lean into a polished, retro-kitsch aesthetic, DAG embraces the grime. Their production is often raw and biting, emphasizing the percussive 'slap' of the bass and the jagged, distorted edges of the guitar. It’s a sound that feels dangerous and unpredictable, capturing the lawless energy of the early 80s UK punk scene while maintaining the structural swing of classic rock and roll.

For the uninitiated, the 1986 debut 'In Sickness & In Health' is the essential starting point. It captures the band at their most feral and influential, laying the groundwork for decades of horror-obsessed punk. If you want to hear how they evolved into a more muscular, heavy-hitting unit, 'Hellbilly Storm' offers a modern take on their signature brand of sonic depravity.

Demented Are Go (DAG aka Demented Are Go!) are a Welsh psychobilly band that was formed around 1982 near Cardiff, Wales. They were one of the earliest in the initial wave of bands to mix punk rock with rockabilly, and as a result, are considered to be highly influential to the psychobilly scene. The band often claims their name originated from the phrase "Demon teds are go!" as an adaptation of the phrase "Thunderbirds are go!" from the Thunderbirds TV series. Psychobilly is often associated with horror.
