Intro

Definition of Sound captures that specific, optimistic intersection of UK club culture and alternative hip-hop that defined the early 1990s. Their sound is built on a foundation of crisp breakbeats and deep basslines, but it is frequently decorated with unexpected textures: jangly acoustic guitars, psychedelic folk samples, and shimmering synth pads. It feels like a bridge between the conscious rap of the US Native Tongues movement and the burgeoning Bristol trip-hop scene, maintaining a distinctly London sense of cool.

What truly sets them apart is their melodic sensibility. Unlike the aggressive posturing of their contemporaries, Kevin Clark and Don Weekes favored a laid-back, almost bohemian approach to lyricism and delivery. They frequently utilized powerful female vocalists to provide soaring, soulful hooks that elevated their tracks from simple rap songs to genuine dance-floor anthems. The production is lush and warm, often feeling more like a live band session than a sterile studio construction.

If you are looking for an entry point, start with the singles 'Now Is Tomorrow' or 'Moira Jane's Café.' These tracks perfectly encapsulate their ability to mix social consciousness with infectious, danceable grooves. It is music that feels both intellectually curious and physically engaging, perfect for moments when you want a beat that has both a brain and a heart.

Definition of Sound was a London-based dance-music group, consisting of Kevin Clark and Don Weekes, working with musicians Rex Brough (a.k.a. The Red King) and later Mike Spencer. Their second and fourth singles, "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" (1991) and "Moira Jane's Café" (1992) were top 40 hits on the UK Singles Chart. The group also had several songs enter the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, including "Moira Jane's Café", which hit No. 1 in 1992.
