De Kreuners are a foundational pillar of the 'Belpop' movement, specifically credited with legitimizing Dutch-language rock in Flanders. Formed in 1978, they emerged from the inaugural Humo's Rock Rally, a pivotal talent competition.
Despite early industry skepticism regarding their choice of language, they self-funded their early recordings in London, establishing a sonic bridge between UK new wave and local sensibilities. Their sound identity is characterized by staccato guitar work, anthemic songwriting, and the charismatic, gravelly vocals of Walter Grootaers. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, they evolved from a scrappy post-punk outfit into a stadium-filling pop-rock institution. Their 1990 album 'Hier en nu' remains one of the best-selling Belgian records of all time. Critically, they are respected for their longevity and their ability to maintain a 'no-nonsense' rock persona while achieving massive pop success. They influenced a generation of Flemish artists to embrace their native tongue without sacrificing rock credibility.
