Intro

Dave Mason’s music feels like the exact moment the 1960s dream transitioned into the 1970s reality. It is characterized by a high-fidelity warmth, anchored by his exceptionally fluid guitar playing and a voice that carries a gentle, slightly weathered soulfulness. Whether he is leaning into the bluesy grit of an electric solo or the shimmering layers of a twelve-string acoustic, there is an inherent friendliness and approachability to his sound that makes it feel like an old companion.

What truly distinguishes Mason is his ability to blend the sophisticated arrangements of the British rock scene with the laid-back, harmony-rich textures of American roots music. He pioneered a specific brand of melodic rock that avoids the aggression of hard rock while maintaining a rhythmic backbone that keeps it from becoming too soft. His production often features marble-smooth vocal stacks and a crisp, percussive acoustic guitar style that became a blueprint for the singer-songwriter era.

To understand his impact, start with the 1970 masterpiece Alone Together. It captures him at his creative peak, offering a masterclass in songwriting and studio craft. From there, move to his work with Traffic to hear his psychedelic roots, or his late-70s hits for a dose of pure, radio-ready adult contemporary gold that still retains its musical integrity.

David Thomas Mason (born 10 May 1946) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist from Worcester, who came to prominence in 1967 as a founding member of the rock band Traffic. While with Traffic, he wrote and sang lead vocals on two of the band's most famous songs, "Hole in My Shoe" and "Feelin' Alright?". His song "Only You Know and I Know" became a signature song for Delaney and Bonnie, and "We Just Disagree", Mason's 1977 solo U.S. hit, written by Jim Krueger, has become a staple of U.S. classic hits and adult contemporary radio playlists. After leaving Traffic he pursued a solo career and recorded with such artists as George Harrison, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Steve Winwood, Fleetwood Mac, Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, and Cass Elliot. In 2004, Mason started a new electric guitar company with business partner and industrial designer Ravi Sawhney, the same year as he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member of Traffic.
