Orleans

Formed in Woodstock, NY in 1972, Orleans represents a sophisticated intersection of Northeast singer-songwriter craft and Southern soul rhythms. The core lineup of John Hall, Larry Hoppen, and Wells Kelly (later joined by Lance Hoppen) initially pursued a high-energy R&B-influenced rock sound, heavily inspired by New Orleans legends like Allen Toussaint.

Their early work at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio established a rhythmic credibility that underpinned their eventual commercial pivot. Under the production of Chuck Plotkin, the band refined their sound into a polished, harmony-heavy pop-rock style that yielded massive hits like 'Dance With Me' and 'Still the One.' Despite being categorized as soft rock, the band maintained a technical edge, often touring with more improvisational acts like Little Feat. John Hall's departure in 1977 for a solo career and political activism (notably the No Nukes movement) marked a shift, though the band continued under the Hoppen brothers' leadership. Critically, they are respected for their vocal arrangements and clean production, serving as a bridge between the gritty rock of the early 70s and the slick 'Yacht Rock' era of the late 70s.
