Delicate, off-kilter pop that feels like a house leaning at a strange angle. Brittle guitars and dry percussion for fans of intricate, quiet puzzles.
Cryptacize sounds like a meticulously constructed clock that occasionally skips a beat on purpose. The music is defined by a strange, geometric beauty where every guitar pluck and cowbell hit feels intentional yet slightly misplaced. Nedelle Torrisi's vocals are airy and precise, floating over Chris Cohen's signature 'tilted' guitar work, creating a sound that is both comforting and deeply uncanny.
What makes them truly distinctive is their commitment to a 'dry' aesthetic. There is no reverb to hide behind here. The arrangements are skeletal and brittle, favoring unusual melodic intervals and rhythmic patterns that feel like they were composed in a room where the floor isn't quite level. It is pop music filtered through the lens of avant-garde jazz and 1960s sunshine pop, stripped of all its excess.
Start with 'Dig That Treasure' to hear their most cohesive statement. It captures their ability to turn surreal, almost nonsensical ideas into earworms that stick with you. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who likes their pop music with a side of intellectual curiosity and a touch of the unexplained.
Cryptacize is a California pop band founded by Nedelle Torrisi and Chris Cohen in 2006. They released two records on the Asthmatic Kitty label. After seeing percussionist Michael Carreira's solo cowbell videos on YouTube, Cohen and Torrisi asked him to join the band and they recorded their debut album Dig That Treasure (which was named after a musical written by Cohen's father in 1958). Cryptacize generated some controversy in 2008 with their cover of Steely Dan's Peg when some readers posted angry comments on Stereogum. They toured the US many times, opening for bands such as Why?, Danielson, Sufjan Stevens, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, and The Fiery Furnaces.
