First Floor Power

Artful Swedish indie pop that pairs afrobeat-inspired rhythms with dry, intimate vocal harmonies. Playful, restless, and deeply human music for quiet afternoons.

Intro

First Floor Power sounds like the intersection of a 70s pop sensibility and a restless, art-school curiosity. Their music is defined by a certain 'dryness' - the drums are crisp and unadorned, the guitars are clean and rhythmic, and the vocals feel like they are being whispered directly into your ear. There is a palpable sense of space in their arrangements that allows the clever melodic hooks to breathe.

What truly sets them apart is their rhythmic foundation. While many of their Swedish contemporaries leaned into lush orchestration, First Floor Power integrated subtle afrobeat influences and staccato syncopation. This gives their songs a nervous, kinetic energy that contrasts beautifully with the gentle, often breathy vocal harmonies provided by Jenny and Sara Wilson. It is music that feels both intellectual and instinctively danceable.

For those new to the band, 'There Is Hope' is the essential starting point. It captures the band at their most cohesive, blending their experimental rhythmic urges with undeniable pop songwriting. It is the sound of a band figuring out exactly how much they can strip away while still keeping the listener hooked.

First Floor Power is an indie rock band from Sweden. FFP recorded and released their debut EP We Are the People in 2000 on the Swedish label Silence Records. In 2001 their debut album There is Hope was released. Swedish National TV produced a one-hour documentary about the band which focused on the struggle and attempts of the band in its early career. Their sound has been described as a combination of afrobeat and 70s pop music. The band was listed in the "ten albums of the year" in Time Out Magazine. Jenny Wilson left the band to pursue a solo career after the band's second album.
