Intro

China Crisis occupies a unique space in the 80s canon, sounding less like a neon-lit dance floor and more like a watercolor painting of the English countryside. Their music is defined by a gentle, pastoral beauty that merges the synthetic pulse of New Wave with the harmonic complexity of jazz-rock. It is polite but deeply felt, characterized by Gary Daly’s breathy, intimate vocals and Eddie Lundon’s crystalline guitar work.

What truly sets them apart is their 'sophisti-pop' sensibility, particularly during their collaboration with Steely Dan’s Walter Becker. Unlike their more aggressive post-punk peers, China Crisis favored restraint, using fretless bass lines and shimmering synthesizers to create a sense of airy, open space. There is a recurring sense of wistfulness in their melodies that makes even their upbeat tracks feel slightly autumnal.

To understand their appeal, start with the album 'Flaunt the Imperfection'. It represents the pinnacle of their craft, where pop accessibility meets high-fidelity studio perfection. It is the ideal soundtrack for when you want music that is intelligent enough to reward close listening but smooth enough to simply wash over the room.

China Crisis are an English new wave and synth-pop band formed in Kirkby, near Liverpool, Merseyside in 1979 with a core of lead vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist/vocalist Eddie Lundon. Initially a politically charged post-punk band influenced by Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, China Crisis soon crossed over to a more commercial sound and had success in the United Kingdom in the 1980s with ten top-50 singles, including the top-10 hit "Wishful Thinking", and three albums charting in or just outside the top 20, including Working with Fire and Steel and the top-10 entry Flaunt the Imperfection, that both received a gold certification.
