Bright, literate guitar pop that balances youthful earnestness with sophisticated jazz-inflected arrangements. Perfect for thoughtful mornings and autumn walks.
Aztec Camera sounds like the intersection of post-punk ambition and classic pop craftsmanship. At the center is Roddy Frame's distinctive guitar work, which ranges from frantic, percussive acoustic strumming to fluid, jazz-influenced lead lines. The music carries a certain Scottish soulfulness, blending the jangly energy of the Postcard Records scene with a growing fascination for high-fidelity production and sophisticated harmonic structures.
What makes them distinctive is Frame's precocious songwriting. While his peers were often deconstructing pop, Frame was embracing its most elegant forms, incorporating bossa nova rhythms, blue-eyed soul, and lush orchestrations without losing his indie credibility. It is music that feels both intellectually sharp and emotionally open, characterized by a 'sunny-sad' quality that is quintessentially Glaswegian.
Start with 'High Land, Hard Rain' to hear the definitive blueprint of 80s indie pop. It captures a teenage Frame at his most melodic and energetic. From there, move to 'Love' to experience their transition into slicker, chart-ready sophisti-pop, or 'Dreamland' for a more mature, Ryuichi Sakamoto-produced atmospheric take on their sound.
Aztec Camera were a pop/new wave band founded in 1980 by Roddy Frame, the group's singer, songwriter and only consistent member. The band released a total of six studio albums: High Land, Hard Rain (1983), Knife (1984), Love (1987), Stray (1990), Dreamland (1993) and Frestonia (1995); and found commercial success with the songs "Oblivious", "Somewhere in My Heart" and "Good Morning Britain" (a duet with former Clash guitarist Mick Jones).
