Breakestra

Breakestra is a Los Angeles-based funk collective founded by multi-instrumentalist Miles Tackett in 1996. The project emerged from the 'Root Down' club nights, serving as a bridge between the deep funk revival and the underground hip-hop scene.

Their core identity is defined by the 'Live Mix' concept, where a 10-piece band recreates the experience of a hip-hop DJ set, playing the original funk and soul breaks that formed the basis of classic rap production. This approach earned them a spot on the prestigious Stones Throw label. Evolutionarily, the band moved from being a high-concept cover ensemble to a formidable original outfit with 2005's 'Hit the Floor.' Critically, they are praised for their 'human-sampler' precision and for maintaining the 'funk flame' during an era dominated by digital production.
