Galactic

Galactic is a cornerstone of the modern New Orleans funk scene, formed in 1994 by bassist Robert Mercurio and guitarist Jeff Raines. While they began as a traditional funk ensemble heavily influenced by The Meters and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, they have spent three decades expanding that vocabulary.

A defining characteristic of the band is the drumming of Stanton Moore, whose 'linear' style and second-line influences provide a unique rhythmic backbone that distinguishes them from standard jam bands. Their career arc is marked by significant shifts in vocal identity, moving from the soulful grit of Theryl DeClouet to an instrumental focus, and eventually to a collaborative model featuring guest artists ranging from Mavis Staples to Mystikal. Critically, they are praised for maintaining the 'NOLA' identity while aggressively integrating hip-hop and electronic elements.
