Intro

Brad sounds like the secret, softer heart of the 1990s Seattle scene. While their contemporaries were leaning into distorted angst, Brad explored a fluid, soulful intersection of alternative rock and R&B. The music is anchored by Stone Gossard's rhythmic, understated guitar work and Regan Hagar's pocket-heavy drumming, but it is defined by the late Shawn Smith's incredible voice, which floats effortlessly between a gritty baritone and a haunting, angelic falsetto.

What makes them truly distinctive is the 'loose' feeling of their records. Many of their best tracks originated as spontaneous studio jams, giving the music a lived-in, organic quality that feels more like a private conversation than a polished product. They utilize warm analog textures, prominent electric piano, and a sense of space that allows the emotional weight of the lyrics to breathe. It is rock music with a groove that feels deeply human and unhurried.

Start with 'Interiors' for their most refined and atmospheric work, or 'Shame' if you want to hear the raw, jam-heavy energy of their debut. They are the perfect discovery for anyone who loves the Seattle sound but wants something more melodic, soulful, and suited for the small hours of the night.

Brad was an American rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington in 1992. Their sound was influenced by the wide variety of influences brought by its members, including Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, Regan Hagar (of Satchel and formerly a member of Malfunkshun), Shawn Smith (a member of Pigeonhed and also of Satchel), and Jeremy Toback.
