Body Count

Body Count is a seminal crossover thrash band formed in 1990 by Ice-T and Ernie C. Emerging from the Los Angeles hardcore and metal scenes, they famously challenged the racial and genre boundaries of the early 90s.

Their sound is a deliberate fusion of Black Sabbath's doom, Slayer's speed, and the directness of hardcore punk. The band's career is defined by its resilience; despite the massive 'Cop Killer' controversy in 1992 and the loss of three original members, they have maintained a consistent presence in the metal world. Critically, they are recognized for pioneering the rap-metal aesthetic, though Ice-T famously insists they are a rock band. Their later work, particularly from 2014 onwards, saw a significant critical resurgence, culminating in a 2021 Grammy win. They occupy a unique cultural space as a bridge between hip-hop royalty and the global metal community, influencing countless nu-metal and hardcore acts while maintaining an uncompromising, street-level authenticity.
