Intro

Bill Wyman’s solo work and his later projects with the Rhythm Kings feel like a masterclass in the 'pocket.' While his former bandmates chased stadium-sized spectacle, Wyman remained tethered to the roots of rhythm and blues, delivering music that feels lived-in, unpretentious, and deeply rhythmic. It is the sound of a musician who no longer has anything to prove, focusing instead on the tactile joy of a walking bassline and the warmth of a well-recorded ensemble.

What makes his sound distinctive is the specific 'thump' of his short-scale fretless bass combined with a surprisingly dry, deadpan vocal delivery. He often leans into a novelty-adjacent pop sensibility, as heard on hits like '(Si Si) Je Suis un Rock Star,' where his understated personality shines through. It is music that prioritizes the groove above all else, maintaining a steady, reliable pulse that feels both vintage and timelessly comfortable.

To get a sense of his range, start with his 1982 self-titled album for a taste of his quirky 80s pop-rock experiments, then move to 'Back to Basics' to hear him return to the gritty, authentic blues-rock that defined his musical DNA. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone who appreciates the subtle art of the rhythm section.
