Aggressive swingbeats and street-ready harmonies that defined the 90s. High-energy R&B with a hip-hop heart, perfect for keeping the party moving.
Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD) represents a pivotal shift in the evolution of R&B, emerging in 1989 as a spin-off from the legendary boy band New Edition. Comprised of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, the group was formed at the suggestion of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to explore a harder, more contemporary sound.
Their 1990 debut, Poison, became a cornerstone of the New Jack Swing movement, largely due to the production work of Dr. Freeze and Public Enemy's Hank Shocklee. This collaboration brought a hip-hop production ethos - heavy sampling, aggressive breakbeats, and a dense, 'noisy' mix - to the world of melodic soul. Culturally, BBD bridged the gap between the clean-cut boy band era and the more explicit, street-aligned R&B of the mid-90s. Michael Bivins further extended the group's influence by discovering and developing acts like Boyz II Men and Another Bad Creation. Though their later albums like Hootie Mack (1993) and Three Stripes (2017) didn't match the commercial heights of Poison, the group remains a touring powerhouse and a critical reference point for the fusion of rap and singing.
