Babbletron

Babbletron is a quintessential New York underground hip-hop trio consisting of MCs Cool Calm Pete and Jaymanila, alongside producer DJ Pre. Emerging in the early 2000s, they became a cornerstone of the Embedded Music label, a boutique imprint that helped define the 'indie rap' sound of the era.

Their sonic identity is built on DJ Pre's dusty, sample-centric production which leans heavily on jazz, funk, and obscure soul, often characterized by a warm, lo-fi texture. Cool Calm Pete's signature deadpan, monotone delivery provides a perfect counterpoint to the more energetic, though still cerebral, flow of Jaymanila. Critically, they are recognized for 'Mechanical Royalty' (2003), an album that sits comfortably alongside the works of contemporaries like Hangar 18 and Junk Science. Their influence is most felt in the 'lo-fi hip-hop' and 'jazz-hop' movements that followed, as they were early adopters of the relaxed, atmospheric aesthetic that would later dominate internet radio.
