Kid Acne

Gritty, dusty boom bap with a deadpan northern wit. It sounds like graffiti fumes and late-night council estate surrealism. Perfect for creative focus or city walks.

Intro

Kid Acne sounds like the intersection of a dusty record crate and a stained sketchbook. His music is built on a foundation of classic boom bap, but it is filtered through a distinctly British, DIY lens that prioritizes texture and character over polished sheen. There is a specific kind of warmth here, the kind found in analog hiss and the crackle of a well-loved 7-inch record, paired with a vocal delivery that is conversational, dry, and deeply rooted in the geography of Northern England.

What makes him truly distinctive is his multidisciplinary perspective. As a renowned graffiti artist and illustrator, his lyrics often feel like verbal tags, full of vivid, surrealist imagery and hyper-local references that paint a picture of British life that is both mundane and magical. The production, often handled by collaborators like Req or Spectacular Diagnostics, leans into the 'hauntology' of hip-hop, using samples that feel like half-remembered ghosts from old television sets or forgotten library records.

Start with 'Hauntology Codes' to hear his modern, refined take on this aesthetic, where the beats are crisp yet ghostly. If you want to hear the raw, punk-influenced energy of his earlier work, 'Romance Ain't Dead' captures a chaotic, illegal-party-in-a-village-hall energy that is uniquely his own.

Kid Acne (real name Ed Bradbury, born 1978) is a multidisciplinary artist and emcee. He was born in Lilongwe, Malawi. He grew up in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, and moved to Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England to study Fine Art when he was 17. He spent his formative years painting graffiti, creating fanzines and making limited run records on his own Invisible Spies imprint. Since then he has released 7 studio albums as Kid Acne, most notibly Hauntology Codes, produced by Spectacular Diagnostics and released on Lex Records in 2023.
