As I Lay Dying stands as a pillar of the 2000s melodic metalcore movement, originating from San Diego in 2000. Led by founder Tim Lambesis, the band synthesized the melodic sensibilities of 'Gothenburg style' death metal (At the Gates, In Flames) with the ethics and rhythmic structures of the American hardcore scene.

Their mid-2000s output, particularly 'Shadows Are Security' and 'An Ocean Between Us', solidified their position as commercial and critical leaders in the genre, characterized by intricate dual-guitar harmonies and high-fidelity production. Despite their early association with the Christian metal scene, the band's lyrical focus shifted toward broader existential and philosophical themes over time. The group's trajectory was famously interrupted in 2014 by Lambesis's legal conviction, leading to a hiatus and the formation of Wovenwar by the remaining members.
