Released in 2003, Frail Words Collapse served as As I Lay Dying's breakthrough and their debut for Metal Blade Records. While their debut, Beneath the Encasing of Ashes, was a more straightforward hardcore affair, this record introduced the melodic death metal influences - specifically the 'Gothenburg sound' - that would define the metalcore explosion of the mid-2000s. Recorded with a transitional lineup including guitarist Evan White, the album features a rawer production than its successor, Shadows Are Security. It is anchored by the drumming of Jordan Mancino, whose double-bass work became a benchmark for the genre.
