Aggressive, high-velocity jazz fusion that hits like a physical force. Dense improvisations and heavy grooves for when you need music that demands total attention.
Arcana was a short-lived but immensely influential jazz fusion supergroup formed in 1995. The project was anchored by the production and bass work of Bill Laswell, who sought to bridge the gap between the uncompromising avant-garde and the power of heavy fusion.
The original trio featured the radical British improviser Derek Bailey on guitar and the legendary Tony Williams, whose work with Miles Davis redefined modern drumming. Their debut, 'The Last Wave', is a masterclass in tension, characterized by Bailey's dissonant, anti-melodic shards over Williams' explosive polyrhythms. Following Bailey's departure, the second album 'Arc of the Testimony' expanded the palette with guests like Buckethead and Pharoah Sanders, leaning into a more expansive, dark-ambient fusion sound. The group's trajectory was tragically cut short by the death of Tony Williams in 1997. Critically, Arcana is viewed as a definitive peak of the 90s NYC 'downtown' scene, representing a successful synthesis of free improvisation, dub-influenced production, and high-intensity jazz-rock.
