High-gloss synth-pop featuring dramatic dual-lead vocals and driving electronic rhythms. The sound of neon-lit nights and high-stakes romantic tension.
Animotion captures the quintessential high-energy polish of the mid-1980s Los Angeles synth scene. Their sound is defined by a propulsive, danceable foundation of electronic percussion and sharp, staccato synthesizer hooks. It is music that feels expensive and meticulously crafted, yet it retains a raw, theatrical edge thanks to the intense vocal performances that often trade lines like a dramatic dialogue.
What truly sets them apart is the chemistry between their male and female leads, creating a conversational and often confrontational energy within their pop structures. While many of their contemporaries leaned into the moody or the minimalist, Animotion embraced a maximalist approach, layering shimmering textures and driving basslines that demand movement. Their work bridges the gap between the art-school cool of new wave and the accessible hooks of mainstream pop.
Start with their 1984 self-titled debut to experience the peak of their creative power. The tracks here are masterclasses in 80s production, offering a perfect entry point for anyone looking to understand the intersection of electronic innovation and radio-ready charisma.
Animotion is an American synth-pop band from Los Angeles, California, best known for the songs "Obsession", "Let Him Go", "I Engineer", and "Room to Move". Formed in 1983 from the remnants of a retro science-fiction band called Red Zone, the band emerged during the height of the new wave and synth-pop movement, combining electronic instrumentation with rock influences. They signed a record deal with Mercury Records in 1984 and released four studio albums. Their self-titled debut album, Animotion (1984), featured "Obsession", which became a major international hit, reaching the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and charting in multiple countries. The band followed up with albums such as Strange Behavior (1986) and Animotion (1989), but underwent several lineup-changes, including the departure of founding-members Astrid Plane and Bill Wadhams. After disbanding in the early 1990s, Animotion reunited in 2001 with its original members and has continued to perform live. In 2017, they released Raise your Expectations, their first studio album in nearly 30 years.
