Intro

Alexz Johnson possesses a voice that feels like it was built for arenas but chooses to live in the intimate, slightly frayed edges of indie pop. Her sound is defined by a striking contrast: the technical precision of a seasoned pro paired with the raw, restless energy of an artist who has fought for every inch of her creative freedom. It is music that sounds like a storm clearing, full of soaring melodies and sudden, sharp emotional turns.

What truly sets her apart is her vocal character, which carries a natural rasp and a 'crystalline' power that can shift from a vulnerable whisper to a thunderous belt in a single breath. Unlike the polished sheen of her early-2000s contemporaries, her independent work embraces a more eclectic, art-pop sensibility, often incorporating warm analog textures and soul-influenced arrangements that feel both timeless and deeply personal.

New listeners should start with 'A Stranger Time' to hear her at her most atmospheric and evolved. For those who want to hear the bridge between her television roots and her indie future, 'Voodoo' offers a glimpse into the gritty, rock-leaning pop that defined her transition into a self-governing artist.

Alexzandra Spencer Johnson (born November 4, 1986) is a Canadian musician and actress. Known for her distinctive sound since her debut in 2010, her first album, Voodoo, was independently released with her brother, Brendan Johnson. Over the years, she has released several albums and EPs, including: The Basement Recordings series (2011–2013), Skipping Stone (2012) and her sophomore album Let 'Em Eat Cake (2014). She continued to evolve with subsequent albums A Stranger Time (2017), Still Alive (2020) and Seasons (2023). Johnson is best known for her roles as Jude Harrison in the CTV series Instant Star, as Annie Thelen in the Disney Channel series So Weird, and as Erin Ulmer in the 2006 horror film Final Destination 3. She additionally guest starred as Saturn Girl, a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, in the series Smallville. She was nominated three times for a Gemini Award for Best Performance in a Children's or Youth Program or Series (Instant Star), winning the award in 2008.
