Heavy, slow-motion rock that feels like a long, honest conversation. Intimate vocals and patient guitars for moments of deep reflection and solitude.
40 Watt Sun creates music that feels like a physical weight, yet it is profoundly gentle. It is a sound defined by extreme patience, where distorted guitars are stripped of their aggression and transformed into a warm, vibrating hum. The tempo is famously slow, but it never feels stagnant; instead, it feels like the natural pace of a heavy heart.
What truly sets them apart is Patrick Walker's vocal performance. Unlike the operatic or guttural styles common in heavy music, his voice is raw, conversational, and devastatingly sincere. He sings as if he is inches away from your ear, delivering lines that feel less like lyrics and more like private confessions. The transition from their early, distorted doom sound to their recent, more acoustic-leaning work has only heightened this sense of intimacy.
For those new to the project, the debut album is the bridge between traditional doom metal and their current 'dirge rock' identity. However, their later work offers a more refined, crystalline version of their emotional core. It is music for the quietest parts of the day, designed for listeners who find comfort in the beauty of sadness.
40 Watt Sun is the musical project of British singer, guitarist and songwriter Patrick Walker, founded in early 2009 following the dissolution of his previous band, Warning, one of the most important, highly regarded and influential bands to emerge from the ‘90s doom metal scene. Initially formed as a three-piece with drummer Christian Leitch and bassist/producer William Spong, 40 Watt Sun is now the singular project of Patrick Walker as its centre and sole stable member, alongside a group of revolving musicians. Hank Shteamer of Rolling Stone magazine has described the band's music as "a poetic, gradually unfolding dirge rock."
