Intro

14 Bis creates a sound that is profoundly rooted in the landscape of Minas Gerais, blending the sophisticated harmonic language of the Clube da Esquina movement with the structural ambition of 1970s progressive rock. Their music is characterized by a unique 'pastoral' quality, where acoustic guitars and flutes coexist with soaring Moog synthesizers and complex, multi-layered vocal arrangements that recall the best of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young or Yes.

What truly sets them apart is their ability to make high-concept musicality feel effortless and comforting. There is a specific warmth to their analog production that feels like a physical embrace. While their peers in the prog-rock world often leaned into cold technicality, 14 Bis maintained a connection to Brazilian folk roots (Caipira) and a pop sensibility that made their songs staples of national radio and even children's programming.

To understand their magic, start with 'Planeta Sonho' or 'Linda Juventude'. These tracks perfectly encapsulate their blend of cosmic wonder and grounded, melodic songwriting. It is music for those who want the complexity of art-rock without losing the emotional resonance of a well-crafted folk song.

14 Bis is a Brazilian pop-rock band. The band took its name from Santos-Dumont's 14 Bis airplane. The band was formed in 1979 in the state of Minas Gerais, when the members of two bands, O Terço and "Bendegó" decided to merge. Flávio Venturini and Vermelho, two founding members of 14 Bis, were also members of the Clube da Esquina band. Música popular brasileira is a strong element in many of 14 Bis compositions. The influence of progressive rock and Caipira is evident in many of its compositions, such as in their use of analog keyboards and complex vocal arrangements. The group reached the peak of their success during the 1980s with notable compositions and performance of popular Brazilian songs. Due to the mild, often happy and soothing theme of many of its compositions, the band was quite popular among children.
