Released in 1997 on the Winter & Winter label, Urlicht (Primal Light) represents a watershed moment in the career of Uri Caine and a landmark in the 'Third Stream' tradition. Caine, a pianist deeply rooted in both the Philadelphia jazz scene and classical training, took the radical step of deconstructing the works of Gustav Mahler. Rather than providing straight jazz arrangements, Caine utilized a diverse ensemble - including clarinetist Don Byron and violinist Mark Feldman - to highlight the Jewish 'Klezmer' roots and cantorial influences that Mahler often suppressed or stylized in his symphonies. The recording is characterized by its high-fidelity capture of acoustic textures and its daring stylistic shifts, moving from avant-garde improvisation to traditional folk and operatic singing.
