Mnemosyne

Released in 1999 as a sequel to the massive crossover success of 1994's Officium, Mnemosyne represents the peak of Jan Garbarek's collaboration with the Hilliard Ensemble. Recorded at St. Gerold Monastery in Austria, the album utilizes the natural acoustics of the space to create a 'third dimension' of sound. Unlike its predecessor, which focused heavily on early European polyphony, Mnemosyne broadens the repertoire to include fragments of Iroquois music, Estonian lullabies, and ancient Greek paeans.
