Tortoise

Released in 1994, Tortoise's self-titled debut is widely considered the spark that ignited the American post-rock movement. Recorded at Idful Studios by member John McEntire, the album moved away from the guitar-centric aggression of the era's indie rock in favor of a multi-instrumental approach influenced by krautrock, dub, and jazz. The lineup featured a 'supergroup' of Chicago underground musicians from bands like Bastro, Eleventh Dream Day, and Slint. The album is notable for its use of two bass guitars, which creates a dense, rhythmic foundation that allows for melodic experimentation on mallet percussion and synthesizers. Unlike their later, more electronic-leaning work like 'TNT', this debut is earthier and more grounded in live interplay, though it already shows the 'studio-as-instrument' philosophy that would define their career. It remains a cornerstone of the Chicago sound and a vital document of 90s experimentalism.
