Semaphore

Released in 1998, Semaphore is the second full-length effort from the British trio Fridge, featuring a young Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) alongside Adem Ilhan and Sam Jeffers. While their debut hinted at their experimental tendencies, Semaphore solidified their reputation as pioneers of a specific 'leftfield' post-rock sound that integrated glitch and sampling into a live band setting. The album is characterized by its heavy reliance on rhythmic loops and found-sound textures, often eschewing traditional melodic structures in favor of atmospheric exploration. Critics at the time, including NME and AllMusic, noted its deceptive simplicity, highlighting how tracks like 'Teletexed' and 'Chroma' use repetition to build a trance-like state before introducing abrasive elements like the free-jazz saxophone on 'Low Fat Diet'.
