The New Game

Released in 2008, The New Game is Mudvayne's fourth studio effort and marks a significant era of professionalization for the band. Produced by Dave Fortman, the album leans into a more traditional hard rock and alternative metal framework compared to the experimental 'math-metal' of L.D. 50. This shift was partly influenced by vocalist Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett's time in the supergroup Hellyeah, which favored a more straightforward, groove-oriented approach. Despite the move toward melody, Ryan Martinie's bass playing remains a standout feature, providing a technical foundation that distinguishes the record from its peers. The album debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and was notable for its inclusion of numerous bonus tracks, including demos and live versions of earlier hits like 'Dig' and 'Death Blooms,' effectively bridging the gap between their experimental past and their more commercial present.
