The Headless Children

Released in 1989, The Headless Children is widely regarded as W.A.S.P.'s creative peak and a significant departure from their shock-rock origins. Following the departure of guitarist Chris Holmes (who would later return) and the recruitment of Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali and keyboardist Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep), the band's sound evolved into a more sophisticated, 'progressive' form of heavy metal. The album peaked at #48 on the Billboard 200, becoming their highest-charting effort. Lyrically, Blackie Lawless moved away from the controversial 'Filthy Fifteen' themes that drew the ire of the PMRC, instead focusing on drug abuse, political corruption, and the horrors of war. The production is notably denser and more professional than their earlier work, utilizing the Hammond organ to create a dark, atmospheric backdrop. It remains a landmark of the late-80s metal transition, bridging the gap between Sunset Strip glam and the more serious, darker tones of 90s metal.
